Food from around the World

Food from around the World

April 2021

Here at St Bernards, we believe in healthy, nutritious and good food. This is our way of exploring the world in the ways of food! Food is fuel but knowing the simple joy it can bring to us, whether it’s trying something new or enjoying a classic, it’s something everyone enjoys. We like to thank our wonderful team at Wilson Vale, who’s chefs are always equipped with the best recipes and displays that our residents just love. We look forward to seeing where the rest of the year with take us with our cuisine.

Mexican Food Day . . .

What a treat it was on Taco Tuesday! Inspired by a Taco stand Patrick had stumbled across earlier that week, and thought we had to have that here!

The staff and residents loved this feast, with a variety of different meats and toppings!

Catered by Jake from the Wilson and Vale team, this was a day to remember.

Italian Day . . .

From pizza, to meatballs and lemon tarts!

This was a tasty day for all staff and residents. Freshly made from scratch in our very own kitchen by our wonderful chefs from Wilson and Vale.

The variety of textures and flavours was a treat like no other. This went down a hit with everyone, who doesn’t love pizza?!

Chinese New Year . . .

This year we were very keen to celebrate each and every holiday we could. Including Chinese New Year.

The home was decorated beautifully, and our residents and staff really engaged with one another over the feast prepared for everyone!

Our chefs team really went the extra mile!

Pancake Day. . .

A day celebrated by everyone around the world, we could wait to get stuck in here at St Bernards!

We had a wonderful set up in our dining room, with pancakes being made fresh in front of the residents, and all the toppings you could ask for!

We wish it was pancake day every day.

Christmas at St. Bernards 2020

Christmas at St. Bernards

December 2020

Christmas is a time for hope and brings families and communities together. This past year has been one like no other and bought challenges that were unforeseen. With this being said, the year has also highlighted that love and kindness will always prevail over any darkness.

St. Bernards Residential Care would like to thank all those who have thought of us throughout the year and wish you all a wonderful, safe and Happy Christmas!

We believe we can get through anything as a family, and look towards the future with hope and gratitude.

Deck the Halls…

The halls and rooms are full of Christmas! Trees, sparkling baubles, lights and the gentle smell of fresh pine and cinnamon runs throughout the home. St. Bernards at Christmas has always been a magical time for all. The home is where the heart is, and despite the year we have had – Christmas is certainly not cancelled!

Wilson Vale and St. Bernards

As always we have been working with the wonderful team at Wilson Vale to ensure the absolute best when it comes to festive food and treats for our residents. We particularly enjoyed our ‘German Market’ inspired day, where residents were able to enjoy the very best of a Christmas market in the safety of the home.

Virtual Gatherings

In ‘normal times’ the home would be full of guests, entertainers and family. We have got creative this year and made sure we are still connected with all those who make Christmas so special for our residents.

We have had the enjoyment of watching the  National Welsh Opera, The Alzheimer’s Society ‘Virtual Christmas Carols’, pantomimes, children’s plays, Church services and so much more!

The residents have been able to view in the comfort of the numerous designated lounges we have, in safe and comfortable settings.

Crafts and ‘Engage’ at St. Bernards

Encouraging our residents to get involved with crafts is not only great for mental stimulation and creativity, but also a fantastic opportunity for socialising and being ‘Engaged’ with the present moment and whom they are sharing that time with. The idea of ‘Engage’ in the home is about spending 1-2-1 time with residents through meaningful activities.

The world inside St. Bernards during Covid

The world inside St. Bernards during Covid

September 2020

The recent spike in Birmingham has meant that we are taking extra precautions at St. Bernards to ensure the safety of our residents and staff.

We may have temporarily closed the world out from St. Bernards, but our staff are amongst the most caring and inspiring individuals who strive to bring love and light, to all those under their care.

This family run home has always been driven to care for the elderly, on values of love, kindness and deep understanding of individual needs.

Here is a sneak peek into the home

The moment you wake up

Freshly brewed hot drinks presented in individual sized porcelain tea pots, accompanied by freshly squeezed orange juice; with a choice of any breakfast. The carefully presented tray is hand delivered by our waitresses with the morning paper and a copy of the ‘Daily Diary’.

A plan for the day

The Daily Dairy is a booklet that is created on a daily basis that includes the food menu and the activities for the day. Each activity ensures safety of the residents but does not compromise on the quality of events. Waking up with a plan helps to ensure mental, emotional and physical stimulation. There is always something to look forward to.

“There is always something to look forward to.”

Dealing with separation from family and friends

This time in isolation can be a worrying time for both residents and families. The separation of physical contact can lead to loneliness, depression and anxiety.

Here at St. Bernards we have dedicated ipads to ensure regular video calls are made to loved ones as well as phone calls.

Keeping the bond and relationship active between family members and residents is key to the core values of St. Bernards.

Keyworker programme

Each resident is paired with a member of staff, which is their ‘Keyworker’.

During this lockdown period, the keyworkers have been the link between families and residents and a crucial part to the well- being of our dear residents.

The keyworker will make sure that the ‘Life History’ of the care plan is completed – this is a great tool to use, when planning the resident’s day and what activities they may be interested in.

Keeping active and St. Bernards

Mental agility and physical stimulation are extremely important in normal times, but especially in this time of uncertainty. Being active at St. Bernards means having shared mealtimes with both staff and residents, taking part in activities set by a dedicated team and having 1-2-1 time with keyworkers and other staff. Everything is carried out under government guidelines and Public Health England.

Wilson Vale, our in-house caterers have been incredible during this time, and we have been able to put special events together based around food and themes, from ‘Socially Distanced Garden BBQ’s, to wine tasting and cake decorating.

The Garden and the Spa at St. Bernards

Many of you already know and love the grounds at St. Bernards. The garden itself is landscaped with a clear walking path running along the outside. Residents are able to take leisurely walks around the garden, anytime of the day accompanied by one of our staff members.

The Garden Spa is an addition to the home that was introduced in 2018, it facilitates many therapies and is a space for residents to enjoy and overlooks the entire garden.

“Being positive in a negative situation isn’t naïve, it’s called Leadership”

Dinner and Treats throughout the day

As mentioned we work very closely with Wilson Vale catering to ensure the absolute highest quality of food is served. High in nutrition, always freshly made and never compromised in taste.

The food that is served is just as important as the mental and physical health of our residents ensuring all senses are stimulated.

These times are unprecedented and is forever evolving, what we are certain of is the dedication and commitment to the well-being of our residents and safety of staff. We may be closing the doors to the outside, but the world we are creating for those at St. Bernards will always be surrounded by love, compassion with the aim to excel both mentally and physically.

We will always lead the way in this direction.

Putting our resident first always

Putting our residents first always

March 2020

St. Bernards and Coronavirus – Putting our residents first

Please be advised that St. Bernards Residential Care will be closed as of the 19th March 2020 until further notice. This is adhering to the latest Government and Public Health England guidance. We understand this is a difficult time for all but we must put the health and wellbeing of our residents at the forefront of everything. As you know the elderly and medically vulnerable are at the greatest risk so we must shield them as much as we can.

Visiting St. Bernards Residents

With the complexities this virus brings such as its rapid contagion, we are no longer allowing resident’s friends or family to visit the home during this quarantine period. We are however making special effort to keep you in touch with your loved ones with the use of technology. If you wish to speak to any resident at this time please call 0121 708 0177. Alternately we can also arrange a video call so you are able to communicate even further. To use this service, please call the number stated and ask a member of staff to arrange this.

Residents Wellbeing and Mental Health

Please be assured we will be taking extra measures to ensure all residents are both mentally and physically stimulated during this time. Activities in the home will be prioritised and we will be documenting all happenings through our digital care-plans.

“As you know the elderly and medically vulnerable are at the greatest risk so we must shield them as much as we can during these unprescedented times”
